Download Full Lecture in mp3 Understanding The Quran by Imam Anwar Awlaki at http://www.salaattime.com/anwar.html The correct position regarding the status of Arabic and the Muslim Arabs in Islam "And We revealed the Quran in Arabic so that you may understand” (Quran 12:2) In his masterpiece "Anwaar Muhammadiyya” [Urdu edition, p.22-29]” Imam Allamah Yusuf ibn Ismail Nabhabani (may Allah have mercy on him), narrated the following Hadith from Ibn Umar (r), who said, "The Apostle of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, "Allah examined His creation and chose the children of Adam from among them; He examined the children of Adam and selected the Arabs from among them; He examined the Arabs and chose me from among them, so I was always the choicest of choices. Behold, people who love the Arabs, it is out of love for me that they love them, and those who hate the Arabs, it is out of hatred for me that they hate them.” In his book, "Virtues of Arabic”, Shaykh ul-Hadith Mawlana Zakariyya Kandhlawi cites all of the following virtues of the Arabs and the Arabic language: Mulla Ali Qari has quoted the following Hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family: "To have love for the Quraysh is Iman whilst having hatred for them is kufr. Accordingly, whoever has love for the Arabs has expressed love for me (Prophet) and whoever has hatred for the Arabs has in reality shown his hatred for me” (Iqtidaus Siratil Mustaqeem, p.156)
Allamah Shabbir Ahmad Uthmani writes in his commentary regarding the above verse, "The Arabic language, which is the most eloquent, versatile, regulated and magnificent of all languages was chosen for the revelation of the Quran. Because the Messenger was an Arab, it logically follows that its first audience will be Arabs. Then, by means of the Arabs this light spread all around. The words "so you may understand” indicate the reason for revealing the Quran in Arabic viz. that you, who are the nation of the Messenger, should first taste its knowledge and thereafter make others do the same. So it happened.” (Tafseer Uthmani (Urdu), p.311).
Ibn Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, "Love the Arabs for three reasons: Because I am an Arab The Quran is in Arabic The language of the people of Paradise is Arabic (Baihaqi in Shuabul Iman) Tha’alibi writes in Fiqh ul Lugah, ‘one who loves Allah, will certainly love His Messenger and whoever loves the Messenger will love the Arabs’. Mulla Ali Qari has quoted the following Hadith: "To have love for the Quraysh is Iman whilst having hatred for them is kufr. Accordingly, whoever has love for the Arabs has expressed love for me (Prophet) and whoever has hatred for the Arabs has in reality shown his hatred for me” (Iqtidaus Siratil Mustaqeem, p.156)
Abdullah bin Umar (R), in a lengthy Hadith, quoted the following words from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his Family, "Whoever has loved the Arabs has done so because of my love and whoever has hated the Arabs has done so because of having enmity for me” (Al Madkhal, p23) Abu Uthman Nahdi as in Azerbaijan when he received the following letter from the Caliph Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. Wear izar (a cloth used to cover the area between the waist and the ankles) and a sheet. Wear shoes and remove your leather socks and do not wear trousers, but adopt the dress of your father Ishmael (AS), keep yourselves away from a luxurious and pampered life and refrain from the customs of the non-Arabs. Inculcate the habit of sitting in the sunlight because it is the bathing place of the Arabs. Imitate the ways of the people of Ma’d who were an energetic tribe. Wear coarse clothing and make a habit of wearing old clothes. Do not use stirrups (when mounting a horse) but leap onto it. Practice archery. He who becomes proficient in the Arabic language and Arabic grammar, the Quran and Hadith, is the most fortunate. (Baghawi) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him is also reported to have said, "Whoever has the ability to speak correct Arabic should not speak another language because it creates nifaq (hypocrisy). (Iqtidaus Siratil Mustaqem, p. 205) Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him said, "I take an oath in that Being in whose Hand is my life, Allah revealed to every Messenger in Arabic, after which he (the Messenger) used to convey the message to the nation in their language” (Majmuaz Zawaaid, p. 52) Caliph Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have advised regarding the superiority of the Arabic language to his subjects, "(It is preferable if you) do not learn a language other than Arabic” (Al La’Ali) Importance of learning Arabic It is reported that ‘Umar ibn Yazeed wrote to Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari (may Allaah be pleased with him) and said: ‘Learn the Sunnah and learn Arabic; learn the Qur’aan in Arabic for it is Arabic.’ According to another hadeeth narrated from ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), he said: ‘Learn Arabic for it is part of your religion, and learn how the estate of the deceased should be divided (faraa’id) for these are part of your religion.’ Find some way to learn Arabic Umar radi Allahu anhu was once circumambulating the Ka’bah when he heard two men speaking in a language other than Arabic behind him. He turned to them and said, "Find some way to learn Arabic.” ‘Abd Al-Razzâq Al-San’ânî, Al-Musannaf Vol.5 p496
Quran in Arabic "Verily we have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ân
in order that you may understand” [Soorah Yusuf: 2] "And thus We have inspired unto you (O Muhammad) an Arabic Qur’ân that you may warn the mother of the towns (Makkah) and all around it”
[Soorah ash-Shura: 7]
"And truly this (the Qur’ân) is a revelation from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists), which the trustworthy Ruh (Jibreel) has brought down upon your heart (O Muhammad) that you may be (one) of the warners, in the plain Arabic language” [Soorah ash-Shura: 192-195] Very early on in the history of Islam we find such examples of encouraging the mastery of Arabic, among which are: Loss due to Mistake in Arabic greater than loss in wealth A man went to Ziyad ibn Abeehi and complained to him that his father had died and his brother had taken all the inheritance unlawfully, but made a grammatical mistake in his complaint. Ziyad replied, "The loss you have caused your soul is greater than what you have lost in your wealth.” Fear of Non-Standard Usage of Arabic Word or Phrase This trend continued throughout the ages, and with the expansions of the Umayyad dynasty in the 7th Century C.E., solecisms became widespread such that they even afflicted the caliphs and leaders such as ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf al-Thaqafi. Language became a measure of status such that a man’s social standing would drop were he found to commit solecisms, to the extent that ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan was once told that his hair had become gray very early, to which he replied, "It is due to my fear of ascending the pulpit and commiting a solecism during my sermon!" He used to view solecisms in speech to be worse than ripping apart an expensive and precious garment. Importance of Perfection in Arabic Men were often rewarded greatly for merely being able to speak fluently without mistakes, even if they were undeserving of the reward. For example, the Caliph ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-’Azeez used to say, "A man may come to me asking me for something he deserves, but if he commits a grammatical error while asking I deny him it, for it makes me feel as though I am nibbling at a peice of sour pomegranate due to my anger at hearing his mistake. Similarly, a man may come to me asking for something he does not deserve, but if he says it with correct speech I grant him it, due to my delighting at the speech I hear from him." Arabic saves us from Misinerpretation of Quran Ibn Taymiyyaah (rahimahu Allaah) commented, "Before one can interpret and understand the Qur'an and the Hadith, he must know the denotations and connotations intended by the words of Allaah and His Messenger (sallaa Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). How can their words be understood? Knowledge of the Arabic language in which we were addressed will help us to understand what Allaah and His Messenger (sallaa Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) intended through their words, as will understanding the semantics behind the words and phrases. Truly, most of the misguidance of the Innovators occurred due to this reason – they began to misinterpret the words of Allaah and His Messenger (sallaa Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) claiming that they meant one thing, when really they meant another." Learning Arabic in an Obligation (Fard) on EVERY MuslimShaykh Ahmed ibn ‘Abdullah al-Baatilee
If Arabic is a sea, then the Qur'an is the most precious treasures, jewels, pearls and gems that can be found in the sea. But reaching these treasures requires a diver skilled in deep thought and contemplation. One of the prerequisites for a diver to reach this level of skill, is a knowledge and understanding of Arabic and its sciences. Imagine what could have been reaction of Hazarat Umar radi Allah anhu if he would have been with us today to see present scenario when many Muslims have been learning English for the sake of worldly gains but not equally keen on learning Arabic (the language of Jannah) to understand Quran in Arabic or feeling connection with Allah while reciting Quran or while listening to Quran in Salah? Today, majority of Muslims are non-Arabic and just happy with reciting in quran without understanding or feeling Qu'ran in Arabic. They argue in vain that they can depend on translation of the holy quran if they have to understand the message. If the translation was the way out, why would Hazarat Umr radi Allahu advise those two men to find some ways out to learn Arabic? Is it not important to have linguistic unity in Muslims words today? How would a Chinese Muslim speak to Indian Muslim when there is no common language among them? Don’t you feel it is strange that today there are 5 Muslims out of 20 and five of them are tongue tied if they have to talk to each other due to lack of common tongue such as Arabic. If Arabic had been common language, it would have solved many problems such as invisible wall between Arab and non-Arab Muslim world, lack of understanding of Quran due to lack of knowledge of Arabic and many more. It would have made Muslims feel proud for sharing common roots, linguistic & cultural heritage and could have brought brotherhood in real manner through easy communication among Muslims in just one language. In Brief: [1] Allah will be pleased and reward too in here after if Native Arabic Muslim teach or contribute in teaching of Arabic or Non-Arabic Muslim learn on their own. Spreading Arabic also help in spreading the message of Quran indirectly. Further more, to learn because it was the language of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would be following his sunnnah and in reality, learning to think in Arabic would be like following sunnah for 24 hours or as long as we think in Arabic. [2] Knowledge of Arabic makes understanding of the the Holy Quran easier during its recitation and can have more benefits from its message. [3] We can make our Salah (five times prayers) more meaningful for we can understand while the Holy Quran is being recited in it. [4] If all Muslims have one common language, they can understand each other better and can have shared values and can benefit from each other. [5] Muslims can be united linguistically, culturally and can unite together to solve their social-economical problems. [6] Spread of Arabic in Non-Muslims can also provide direct understanding of Quran & Islam and can remove their fear and misconception about Islam. [7] Spread of Arabic outside Arab World has also its worldly benefits as it can become a link language to connect Non-Arab world with Arab world as not all can use English.
